Office 365 Updates: June 2020


AMT’s Monthly Office 365 Updates keep you up to date with new features and important announcements from Microsoft. Office 365 has a continuous roll-out of changes. We filter out the announcements that we think will be most relevant to our customers and send them out in an easily digestible form. Here are the Office 365 June updates.

Updated Feature Update: Teams meeting call and meeting chat size to increase to 300

Based on customer feedback, Microsoft are making some changes to this feature roll-out. Please review the updates below:

They are increasing the new maximum number of participants for Teams meeting and chats from 250 to 300.

Microsoft Teams has a new Information pane and pinned posts

1. Information pane

Selecting the “Channel info” icon in the channel header will open a new Information pane that displays a channel summary. The summary includes the channel description as well as a list of recent contributors and members.

This is also the new home for system messages. Information about team members can be found here or in the Member List.

2. Pinned posts

Any member of a channel will be able to “pin” any channel message to the channel Information pane for all members of the channel to see, unless this feature is disabled in channel moderation settings.

New feature: Suggested replies in Teams mobile

Suggested replies presents users with an option of three responses to choose from for selected messages and will soon be available for your users in Teams for iOS and Android.

(Updated) New Teams meeting setting – require meeting participants to use the lobby

After scheduling a new meeting, the organiser will be able to configure meeting options so that only the organizer can bypass the lobby.

After changing the meeting option to Only me, the meeting organiser can manage who is allowed into the meeting.

Walkie-Talkie in Teams Android

During Public Preview, you need to enable Walkie Talkie using the Teams Admin Centre to provide access to people in your organisation. Once enabled, Walkie Talkie will become available on the Android app within 48 hours. Walkie Talkie allows users to connect with their team using the same underlying channels they are members of. Only users who connect to Walkie Talkie in a channel become participants and can communicate with each other using push-to-talk. 

Inline chat message translation for iOS

Inline chat message translation lets users translate Teams mobile chat messages into the language they choose. This feature is rolling out first for iOS; we will send a separate message when we have the schedule for Android.


M365 Information Governance: Retention improvements for SharePoint Online and OneDrive

Microsoft are improving how Microsoft 365 retention policies and labels work for SharePoint Online and OneDrive. This change will introduce a new retention engine to process these policies aimed at improving scalability and consistency across Microsoft 365 applications.

New Feature: SharePoint Auto Digest Email

SharePoint Auto-News Digest sends automated email to users in your company about the latest News posts that they have not yet read. Using Microsoft intelligence, a curated selection of News posts are shared with users through an email that comes from SharePoint. This is a great way for users to catch up on News that they may have otherwise missed. Only published news posts are sent in the digest, and users will have access to all the news posts that they are sent so rest assured that users won’t see news that they don’t have permission to see. If users want to opt-out of receiving the Auto-News Digest, they can click the unsubscribe button at the bottom of the email.

New Feature: Seamlessly Share Personal Lists in To Do

Microsoft To Do will support list sharing between personal and work accounts. This lets users in your organisation join, view, modify, and add data to lists owned by personal Microsoft accounts.

New Feature: Cumulative analytics for SharePoint hubs

SharePoint hub sites make it easy to organise information and collaboration based on project, department, division, or region. This report provides site owners and members of SharePoint hub sites with analytics for their hubs. The hubs analytics page provides cumulative analytics (including unique viewers, total visits, top sites, and most popular content) for all sites that are part of the hub.

To view these reports, site owners or members need to go to the hub site for which they want to see usage data, click the settings gear Settings icon, and then select Site usage data. By default, users see analytics for all sites in the hub. They can choose to see data for only the hub site.

New Feature: SharePoint, average time spent per user report

The Average time spent per user report shows the trend line for the time users spent on SharePoint site pages and news posts for 7-day and 30-day periods. The average metric is calculated by comparing the total time spent on that page with the number of the unique visitors on that page in the given timeframe.

This report currently does not provide the average value for 90-day period and does not support lists, documents, or administrative pages (such as the site usage or site permissions page). Mobile app views are currently not incorporated in this report.

(Updated) New Feature: Audience targeting in site, footer and hub navigation

Site owners will see the toggle setting to enable audience targeting when editing the site, hub, or footer navigation. Once turned on, site owners and editors can target the specific navigation links to be filtered to specific audiences.

Audience targeting benefits:

  • Enables site owners to create more engaging experiences.
  • Accelerates productivity by bringing targeted, high value resources into focus.
  • Simplifies the viewing experience for users by removing distractions from content they don’t need.

Only site owners can turn audience targeting on and off. Once turned on, any site editor can target menu links to specific audiences using Office 365 Groups or security groups.


(Updated) New Feature: Outlook on the web, new editor capabilities

When your end users are composing an email message in Outlook for the web, they will see suggestions to help them communicate better, such as recommendations for spelling, grammar, and refinements to communicate more concisely. This new feature in Outlook is powered by Microsoft Editor. Users can turn off the feature if they like when they composing an email message.


Mobile Video Sharing from Yammer

This feature is an enhancement to the current video recording and posting experience in Yammer. Recording and uploading video in your Yammer mobile app is the faster way for your users to share video.


New Feature: Noise Suppression in Microsoft Stream

Noise suppression can be turned on by a video owner, and allows viewers an option to isolate speech from other sounds and music during playback. Noise suppression can be switched on or off for each newly-uploaded video.
